Sage Hospitality Group is pleased to announce that Catbird, its 165-room independent extended-stay lifestyle hotel situated in Denver’s thriving RiNo Art District, has received the Independent Lodging Congress’s 2022 Indie Award for Most Innovative Hotel Design.

Conceptualized and designed by Sage Studio, Sage’s in-house creative division, Catbird is an industry-disrupting take on the extended stay segment, blurring the lines between hotel and home by creating adaptable spaces that foster a deeper sense of belonging for guests and the community. Through the Catbird concept, Sage Studio sought to create a hospitality brand unlike anything in the marketplace and worked with a team of standout creative partners including Portland creative agency OMFGCO, Omaha-based integrated design firm DLR Group and local design studio Swan Dive to bring the unique hotel design to fruition.

“Our goal with the ideation and creation of Catbird was to thoughtfully combine the guest experience of staying at a local’s home with activations, amenities and community space, whether in town for a night or three months,” said Jessica Werner, executive vice president of Sage Studio. “We have seen the hotel industry change significantly over the past 20 years with a rapid convergence of asset classes, but the extended stay segment has remained fairly traditional and has unbelievable potential given these robust changes. Catbird creatively bridges the gap between the traditional hotel and AirBnB-like concepts, packaged in the magic of a lifestyle hotel.”

Sitting pretty in Denver’s burgeoning RiNo Art District, Catbird boasts a creative guestroom layout – an efficient 375-400 square-foot design – with full extended stay and micro-apartment amenities designed for functionality, and the needs of long-term guests. Features include patent-pending, custom loft beds with recessed wardrobe unit pullouts, and built-in full-size tables/desks for work or dining. Furthering its home-away-from-home design, the hotel offers an array of amenities to bolster comfort and creativity, including the Catbird Playroom, which offers gear rentals including Vespas, bikes, skateboards, cameras, GoPros, games and musical instruments; complimentary laundry facilities on each floor, a state of the art fitness center boasting Peletons, rowing machines and more; a dog run; and even the option for guests to adopt a plant to care for during their stay.

The property features a unique site configuration that encompasses a 2,500-square-foot, four-bedroom historic home originally built in 1890. The home, known as Klee House, has been preserved as part of Catbird and completely updated with high-design, high-touch amenities and contemporary décor to accommodate groups of up to 12 guests. The lobby, known as Catbird’s Living Room, boasts self-serve kiosks for check-in and was designed as a space for community and coworking. Offering an approachable work environment, the lobby is a hub of activity, where guests can mingle while enjoying fast and fresh food, coffee and cocktails throughout the day, courtesy of the grab-and-go dining concept, Catbird Kitchen.

Atop the building, measuring at exactly a mile high above the city, guests can take in 360-degree views of Denver’s skyline and the Rocky Mountains from the 17,700 square foot rooftop, while also enjoying fire pits, hot tubs, an amphitheater, a lawn with life-sized games and the hotel’s signature bar and restaurant, The Red Barber.

“We’re extremely honored to have Catbird recognized by a prestigious organization like Indie Lodging Congress and its constituents,” said Walter Isenberg, co-founder, president & CEO of Sage Hospitality Group. “Catbird has proved to be a revolutionary concept, and we look forward to recreating its success in new markets in the coming years, focusing on neighborhoods adjacent to central business districts that cater to creatives.”
